Lost in Translation

She is too confident,
they say, for her own good.
You mean not submissive.

Sounds like a warning of
danger, that she could or
should end up in trouble.

A verdict, a reprimand.
Disciplinary caution for
her lack of diffidence.

Patriarchal damnation
of a mad, bad girl.

For her lack of deference
to the power they wield against
those they seek to dominate.

She needs, they say, to get
some humility. Instead of
confidence, you mean, in

challenging a culture of
bullying disguised as authority.
She is just not fearful enough.

Patriarchal damnation
of a mad, bad girl.

And by the way, she sounds
too polished when she speaks,
which shows she is insincere.

Her clarity creates disturbance,
it seems, and alarm.
She sounds antagonistic.

You mean she does not agree
with your every demand.
She resists intimidation.

She is also aggressive.
You mean she has opinions,
is articulate, assertive.

Patriarchal damnation
of a mad, bad girl.

She is, they say, a bully.
You mean you cannot push her
around or dominate her.

Disinclined to unquestioning
acceptance, default girlie
conformity, silent obedience,

she is, they say, impossible
to work with. A man hater.
You mean you cannot flirt or

squeeze, stroke or grab her to
emphasise your point or persuade.
Seduction, coercion and

unsolicited intimacy,
those entwined habits of a
lifetime, suddenly stalled.

Patriarchal damnation
of a mad bad girl.

She is, they say, obstructive.
You mean you cannot make her
complicit with wrong doing.

She should not, they say, have
put herself in that situation.
She has only herself to blame.

Patriarchal damnation
of a mad, bad girl.

Just look at her, they say.
The way she dresses, her
hair and make-up, those shoes.

She should be more careful.
