Risk Assessment

           I

You never know

when one will cross
your path. Trip you up.
Knock you off balance.

Disguised as socially conscientious.
Environmentally friendly.
Eco-aware.

You never know

when one will see
you. Seize on you.
Promote your concerns.

Disguised as socially conscientious.
Environmentally friendly.
Gender-aware.

         II

You don’t know

that you will fail
to raise the alarm
in time. That you will
disbelieve the signs.

Dismiss reservations.

Sidestep doubts.

That experience and
understanding will not
be enough to keep you
from harm. To signal
danger. Impending
capture. Ambush.

        III

You will feel foolish and
forlorn. Angry that you did
not heed your nerve endings.

Your knowledgeable inner voice.

Meanwhile the predator roams
free to repeat offend.
Protected by ‘privacy’ and
powerful public forces.

The web of collusion and deceit,
like low level radiation
crackling in our bones, goes
largely undetected and
unexamined.

            IV

A confidence trick is ‘a swindle
perpetrated by someone who
first secures the confidence of
the victim’. An ancient game,
of finance and power.

Reworked as sexual fantasy
and abuse. Re-branded as
SGBV, it sounds like the
international business
it has become.

On a street, in a home.

Near you.

On the web and across
party political lines.

In war zone and
refugee camp.

Hotel and office.

V

SGBV.

Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.
Widespread organised crime,
with intimate and enduring
repercussions.
